Neural substrates of subcortical aphasia in subacute stroke: Voxel-based lesion symptom mapping study

چکیده
Subcortical aphasia develops as a result of damage to subcortical brain areas without loss cortical functions. Although earlier voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) studies have shown possible neural correlates for aphasia, it remains be clarified which regions are associated with aphasia. The aim this study was investigate the substrates in patients stroke using VLSM and atlas-based analyses explore involvement white matter tracts structures. Fifty subacute were retrospectively enrolled: 24 26 We performed patients' fluid-attenuated inversion recovery images found that left perisylvian matter, fronto-occipital fasciculus, uncinate forceps minor significantly more greatly affected than non-aphasia group. anterior thalamic radiation, cingulum (cingulate gyrus), superior longitudinal fasciculus also showed higher group (marginal significance). Among regions, caudate putamen involved Our findings confirm language processing one integrated sensory-motor processes occur region around sylvian fissure. analysis approach can used complement analyses.

The Neural Basis of Reversible Sentence Comprehension: Evidence from Voxel-based Lesion Symptom Mapping in Aphasia
We explored the neural basis of reversible sentence comprehension in a large group of aphasic patients (n = 79). Voxel-based lesion symptom mapping revealed a significant association between damage in temporo-parietal cortex and impaired sentence comprehension. This association remained after we controlled for phonological working memory. We hypothesize that this region plays an important role ...
متن کاملPower in Voxel-based Lesion-Symptom Mapping
Lesion analysis in brain-injured populations complements what can be learned from functional neuroimaging. Voxel-based approaches to mapping lesion-behavior correlations in brain-injured populations are increasingly popular, and have the potential to leverage image analysis methods drawn from functional magnetic resonance imaging. However, power is a major concern for these studies, and is like...
متن کاملAnosognosia for hemianaesthesia: a voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping study.
Brain-damaged patients affected by hemianaesthesia (i.e., the loss of tactile sensibility on the contralesional side of the body) may deny their deficits (i.e., anosognosia for tactile deficits) even reporting tactile experience when stimuli are delivered on the impaired side. So far, descriptive analysis on small samples of patients reported that the insular cortex, the internal/external capsu...
متن کاملAnterior temporal involvement in semantic word retrieval: voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping evidence from aphasia.
Analysis of error types provides useful information about the stages and processes involved in normal and aphasic word production. In picture naming, semantic errors (horse for goat) generally result from something having gone awry in lexical access such that the right concept was mapped to the wrong word. This study used the new lesion analysis technique known as voxel-based lesion-symptom map...
متن کاملCorrections for multiple comparisons in voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping.
Voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) is an important method for basic and translational human neuroscience research. VLSM leverages modern neuroimaging analysis techniques to build on the classic approach of examining the relationship between location of brain damage and cognitive deficits. Testing an association between deficit severity and lesion status in each voxel involves very many i...
